Box Score LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Minot State University came within 2.2 seconds of ending its losing streak.

Carly Boag (So., F, Tamworth, Australia) scored on a short jumper to take a one-point lead with just over 10 seconds remaining.
But William Jewell College's Jesse Wheeler hit a 3-pointer from the right corner to send the Cardinals to a 72-70 win in nonconference NCAA Division II women's basketball at the D2 Vegas Showdown Saturday at the Centennial Hills Center.
Minot State (10-15 overall) has struggled shooting in one large stretch during a season-long seven game losing streak and Saturday it turned out to the first 13 minutes of the second half. The Beavers shot 33.3 percent in the second half compared to 50 percent for William Jewell, but made many of those shots late.
\WJC (15-10) used a big run early in the second half to erase a seven-point Minot State halftime lead. MSU led by as much as 12 in the first half.
The Beavers did a decent job against WJC full court press, but did not handle it well during the stretch. The Cardinals scored 23 points off of turnovers.
MSU trailed William Jewell by six with 3:40 to play, but stormed back behind Boag, sister
Christina Boag (So., F, Tamworth, Australia) and
Lauren Safranski (Jr., G, Burnsville, Minn.). All three had late buckets or free throws to trim the lead and eventual get the one-point cushion.
Chelsea Meeks led the Cardinals with 19 points, while Cassy Nicolay added 18 points and eight rebounds. Holly Switzer finished with 11 for William Jewell.
Carly Boag scored 20 points and added 14 rebounds – both game-highs – for the Beavers.
Katie Hardy (So., F, Fairview, N.D.) added 15 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Morgan Klose (Fr., G, Fairview, N.D.) and Safranski both scored 11 points and both added four rebounds for the Beavers.
MSU will move on to play McKendree University in the second day of the tournament and MSU's final game of the 2011-12 season Sunday at 6 p.m. (PT).
