Buhl, Bausman earn titles

MSU has four wrestlers via for championships at own meet

MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University's Deon Buhl (Sr., Lacey, Wash.) and Marcus Bausman (Fr., Minot, N.D.) defended their home mat as the duo earned championships at the 2012 Minot State University Open Saturday at the MSU Dome.

Buhl defeated teammates Brandon Gifford (Fr., Hardin, Mont.) in the semifinals and Kirby Kain (Fr., Williston, N.D.) in the finals to win the title at 141 pounds. Buhl and Kain danced to a defensive battle with Buhl taking a 3-1 decision. The semifinal was equally difficult for Buhl as he edged Gifford 3-2. Gifford finished third in the weight class with a pin at the 1:37 mark over Colter Steinmetz.

Bausman earned a late takedown of Mickey Cheff from Montana State-Northern to earn a 5-3 decision at 157. Bausman finished with two pins and a 4-0 record on his way to the title. MSU's Drew Spaulding (Fr., Bismarck, N.D.) was 3-2 at 157, losing to Cheff in the semifinals and Jaykob Miler of Jamestown College in the third-place match. Spaulding finished with a pin and a major decision as a part of his three wins on the day.

Dickinson State finished with four weight-class champions as Bryden Lazaro won at 125, Brad Steele earned a title at 149, Jesse Hellinger won at 184 and Jose Lopez went undefeated in heavyweight. The Blue Hawks won four of nine weight classes as 174 and 189 were combined.

The Beavers had one other wrestler in a title match as Joshua Douglas finished with a pin and a major decision before falling 16-0 to Cameron Ness from MSU-Northern in the championship at 133.

Unattached wrestler Matt Fetterley (Muskegon, Mich.), who is a redshirt at Minot State, defeated Skyler Carroll, another unattached wrestler, 12-2 to take the 197 title. Jaymes Stanley (Port Saint Lucie, Fla.) topped Gaelan Malloy of the University of Regina for third at 165, Cody George (Jr., Clancy, Mont.) pinned teammate Luke Michaelson (So., Williston, N.D.) for third at 184 and Jon Wilson (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.), a MSU wrestler who was unattached Saturday, finished fifth at 157 to round out placewinners.

Minot State moves back into dual competition next week as the Beavers travel to future Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference for Minnesota State-Moorhead Friday beginning at 7 p.m.
