MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University head football coach Paul Rudolph has signed six transfer student athletes to compete in the team's inaugural season in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference this fall.
MSU added five junior college transfers and one NCAA Division I transfer and all six players are enrolled currently at Minot State. Joining the Beavers are junior college transfers
Admir Mujakovic, Robbie “Matt” Sumlin, Uepati “Norman” Fatilua, Darious Anderson and
Jeff Buchert.
Payton DeCoteau joined the Beavers after transferring from the University of North Dakota at the semester break.
Mujakovic is a 6-foot-3, 320 offensive lineman from St. Petersburg, Fla., who competed the past two seasons at Merced College in California. He was a two-time All Conference selection at Merced.
“Admir is a quality person – very likeable and enjoyable to be around,” said Rudolph. “We've been recruiting him for over a year and finally got him to attend. He has excellent feet and is strong. He has played every offensive line position at Merced. The coaches there called him a 'coach on the field.' We look for real good things from Admir.”
Sumlin, a 6-2, 190 wide receiver, was a three-sport star at Garces High School in Bakersfield, Calif. He attended Bakersfield College for two seasons, but sat out his first year due to a medical redshirt and did not play football last season. He will have four years of eligibility remaining. Sumlin qualified for the California State Track & Field meet as a sophomore running 10.84 seconds.
“Matt's another enjoyable guy,” Rudolph said. “He was a tremendous talent coming out of high school but had a major injury that set him back in his pursuits. He is fully recovered and we look to Matt to be an impact match-up issue. He has good size to go along with even better speed.”
Fatilua, from Vallejo, Calif., is a 6-foot, 220 linebacker who earned all conference, all state and all region honors at Solano Junior College in Fairfield, Calif.
“Uepati 'Norm' comes to us as a highly acclaimed player,” Rudolph said. “He is also a very good student that played a lot of positions at Solano. His diversity really makes him valuable. He is a good blitzer and plays the run well and will also be a contributor covering kicks. He will add depth to our linebacker position.”
Anderson is a 6-foot, 170 pound corner/safety from Tampa, Fla. He played two seasons for the College of the Siskiyous in Reardley, Calif., where he was tied for the team lead in interceptions with two. He also returned kicks for the Eagles averaging 17.6 yards per return. He holds the record for the longest kick-off return for the Eagles, taking a kick back 101 yards as a freshman.
“Darius is a proven tackler with above average coverage skills,” said Rudolph. “He has played man to man and in zone concepts and has a couple returns for touchdowns. He is also a skilled punt/kick returner.”
Buchert, 6-1, 215, played safety for Rochester Community College in Rochester, Minn. The Plainfield, Conn., native was All-Minnesota Conference both his freshman and sophomore seasons as well as All Region XIII as a freshman.
“Jeff is a very solid tackler and comes to us as a coaches' award winner,” Rudolph said. “He wins this because he is a quality person, great teammate and good football player. He plays anywhere he is needed and is a great special teams player.”
DeCoteau is a 6-1, 235 fullback who spent just one season with UND. He was an all-state and all-region player for Turtle Mountain Community High School, earning four letters in football and five letters in wrestling as a prep. As a senior in high school, he rushed for 930 yards and finished with 89 tackles. His brother, Wally DeCoteau, Jr., played football for the Beavers.
“Peyton is another very good person,” Rudolph said. “He has gotten noticeably bigger than his high school days and we look for good things from him in our backfield.”
The Beavers will announce its high school recruiting class on National Signing Day, Feb. 1.
