MOORHEAD, Minn. – Minot State University freshman
Marcus Bausman (Minot, N.D.) earned his first collegiate title by going 3-0 at 165 pounds at the Concordia College Open here Saturday.
Bausman was one of four MSU wrestlers to place at the meet and the second MSU freshman to impress coach
Robin Ersland over the past two meets. Last week, at the North Dakota State Bison Open, freshman
Jaymes Stanley (Port Saint Lucie, Fla.) drew some accolades from the coach. This week it was Bausman.
“One champions and three other guys place makes for a pretty good day,” said Ersland. “Plus we had two other guys lose in the placing round. The guys are improving and that's our goal.”
Along with Bausman, MSU's
Drew Spaulding (Bismarck, N.D.),
Brandon Gifford (Hardin, Mont.) and Stanley all placed. Spaulding was 3-1 overall and took fifth place in the freshman-sophomore division at 149. He finished with three pins on the day. Gifford was 2-2 in the freshman-sophomore division and earned fourth place at 141 and Stanley was 2-2 and fourth in the open division at 165.
The two wrestlers that almost placed that Ersland was referring to was
Cody George (Jr., Clancy, Mont.) and
Josh Douglas (Kissimmee, Fla.). Douglas went 2-2 at 125 and George was 1-2 at 184.
The Beavers wrestle again at the Minnesota State-Moorhead Open Dec. 3 before playing host to Jamestown College in the season home opener Dec. 7.
